Ford Fusion & Edge Front End Knocking: Sway Bar Link, Bushings, Control Arm or Wheel Hub?
Knocking, creaking or humming from the front of your Ford Fusion or Edge? Learn how to tell a worn sway bar link from bad bushings, a control arm or a wheel hub - and which part fits your car.

The Ford Fusion (2013-2020) and the Ford Edge (from 2015) are built on the same platform and share many front suspension parts. On both cars, the most common complaint is a knock from the front end. Several parts can cause it - and the character of the sound often tells you which one.
Quick Check: What the Sound Means
- Rattle or knock over small bumps at low speed - most often a sway bar link
- Creak or dull thud over bumps, especially in cold weather - sway bar bushings
- Clunk when braking or pulling away, car wanders on the road - lower control arm
- Hum that gets louder with speed - not a knock: wheel bearing and hub
- Knock you can feel in the steering wheel - tie rod end
This is a guide, not a diagnosis: a mechanic confirms it on a lift.
1. Sway Bar Link - the Most Common Cause
The sway bar link connects the stabilizer bar to the strut. Both ends have small ball joints that wear out and develop play.
Symptom: a dry rattle or knock on rough roads and small bumps at 20-50 km/h, while the car otherwise drives normally. The sound often comes from one side.
Check: with the wheel off the ground, shake the link by hand - any play or knocking means it needs replacing.
2. Sway Bar Bushings
The stabilizer bar is mounted to the body with rubber bushings. Over time the rubber dries out and cracks.
Symptom: a creak or dull thud over bumps and in turns, especially in cold weather.
Tip: when you replace the links, check the bushings too - they often wear out together.
3. Lower Control Arm
The lower control arm connects the wheel to the body through rubber bushings. When the bushings wear, the arm no longer holds its position.
Symptom: a clunk when braking or pulling away; the car wanders and needs constant steering corrections; uneven tire wear.
On the Fusion, the arm is sold as a complete assembly with bushings, so there is no need to press in new bushings. After replacing it, have the wheel alignment checked.
4. Wheel Bearing and Hub - When the "Knock" Is Really a Hum
A worn wheel bearing does not knock - it hums. The noise gets louder with speed and may change when you turn. It is often mistaken for tire noise.
Ford Edge 2007-2014
The first-generation Edge uses different parts - Fusion parts do not fit it. The symptoms are the same as above.
When Not to Wait
A rattling link is annoying but not urgent. If the car wanders, pulls to one side under braking, or you feel a knock in the steering wheel, do not postpone the repair - it is a safety issue.
